The Encounter

During my first semester at DigiPen, my art history class asked to create an artwork that embodies a living artist mixed with an art movement from years past. I decided to take the movement of emotion on Romanticism arts and take Simon Stalehag's interpretation of an alternate earth.

With those two subjects I scrolled through my photos and found an eerie picture I took while on a road trip through Steven's Pass. I imported the photo in Krita and started painting over it. I toned down the colors to more of a blue-gray pallet while hinting at warm yellows.

I knew I wanted to capture the eerie feeling, so I picked a deer for my subject. In my experience when deer are slightly off, it causes a fear aspect in me. I painted the deer with warmer colors so it would contrast it from the background. But creating that fear aspect led me to creating a light movement from its eyes. I played with the colors until I landed on red. Red is always a sense of danger and sends a signal of unease. I tested the painting on my friends and family to see if my experiment worked, and surely enough, it did.

Thanks for stopping by, have a wonderful day! :)
